What is the best way to ensure DMS works in a reliable way?

Sep 2, 2022Articles

EU General Safety Regulation (GSR) has mandated Driver Monitoring System (DMS) for inclusion in all new car models starting in 2024. DMS is an advanced safety feature that detects driver drowsiness or distraction and issues a warning to get the driver’s attention back before any accident happens.

Advanced technology and innovative solutions are needed for carmakers to meet the assessment protocol requirements of the five-star DMS safety rating system set by the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP).

Driver Monitoring Systems are most commonly Lidar or camera-based solutions, but other solutions such as pressure sensors for touch and force sensing are used to collect real-time information about the engagement of the driver.

From 2024 onwards, every new car model will require DMS.

Data on driver behavior based on touch and force sensing

Forciot makes sensor solutions that generate data on driver behavior based on touch and force sensing. This real-time sensing on different surfaces in car interiors is also not only for UX but for enhanced safety.

  • Distraction and Drowsiness Recognition data by measuring drivers’ grip and movement
  • Recognizing Driver Availability from touch and by identifying static poses and dynamic poses
  • Detecting Dangerous Behavior from sudden or illogical movements

Distraction and Drowsiness Recognition / Safety warning

Camera is recognizing that the driver is not watching the road, and in addition GRIP detection is recognizing that only one hand is softly touching the steering wheel and no firm grip detected.

Multiple sensor types secure data quality

To secure accuracy and consistency, in a variety of conditions, data from multiple sensor types are needed and combined with algorithms to create AI for vehicle systems’ decision-making.

FORCIOT® stretchable electronics solutions collect real-time data on driver behavior based on touch and force sensing. Sensors are seamlessly merged into car interiors being part of the driving experience enabling advanced functionality and extreme safety. Utilizing for example grip detection in the steering wheel, as a source of data for sensor fusion, creates value for a single sensor system without bringing additional costs.

With FORCIOT® sensor solutions we are making sure that cars are getting safer!
